Age Calculator

Calculate exact chronological age in years, months, days, total weeks, hours lived, day of week born, and countdown to your next birthday.

Direct Answer:To calculate exact age, count the completed years, then the remaining whole months, and finally the remaining days between the date of birth and the target date. For example, a person born on 15 May 1998 is 28 years, 4 months, and 26 days old as of 11 October 2026.

How Exact Chronological Age Is Calculated

Determining chronological age appears simple at first glance, but standard arithmetic subtraction fails because calendar months have differing lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years contain 366 days instead of 365.

Our precision age engine applies the astronomical calendar borrowing algorithm:

  1. Day Difference: Subtract the birth day from the comparison day. If the comparison day is smaller, we borrow the exact number of days from the previous calendar month (taking into account leap years for February).
  2. Month Difference: Subtract the birth month from the comparison month. If the comparison month is smaller (or has been decreased due to day borrowing), borrow 12 months from the year.
  3. Year Difference: Subtract the birth year from the adjusted comparison year.

Common Applications of Chronological Age in India

  • Government Job & Civil Exam Eligibility: Exams such as UPSC, SSC CGL, and State PSCs specify exact age cut-offs (e.g., “Must be between 21 and 32 years as of 1st August”).
  • Financial & Retirement Planning: Schemes like PPF (15 years), Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (under 10 years at entry), and Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS, 60+ years) require exact chronological verification.
  • Insurance Underwriting: Life and health insurance premiums are priced based on “age nearest birthday” or completed chronological age.
  • School Admissions: CBSE, ICSE, and state boards mandate minimum ages for kindergarten and standard 1 admissions as of 31st March or 1st June.

How This Is Calculated

Transparent mathematical formulas and assumptions used across our financial engines.

Mathematical Formula
\text{Age} = \text{Target Date} - \text{Date of Birth} \quad (\text{Years, Months, Days})

Variables & Legend

\text{DOB}
The starting date of birth
\text{Target}
The comparison date (defaults to today)
\text{Years}
Full calendar years elapsed
\text{Days Lived}
Total count of calendar days lived

Step-by-Step Calculation

  1. Year Difference: Y_{\text{target}} - Y_{\text{birth}}

    Compute preliminary year difference.

  2. Month Difference: M_{\text{target}} - M_{\text{birth}}

    Adjust if current month is earlier in the calendar.

  3. Day Borrowing: D_{\text{target}} - D_{\text{birth}}

    Borrow days from previous month if target day is smaller.

Conventions & Assumptions

  • Leap years (366 days) and varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) are accurately accounted for.
  • Total hours and minutes assume whole days (24 hours per calendar day).

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator determines whole completed calendar years, then subtracts the months. If the target day is less than the birth day, it borrows the exact number of days in the preceding calendar month to ensure 100% astronomical accuracy.
